Celebrating National School Sports Week 2024

National School Sports Week is fast approaching!
From Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd June 2024, schools across the UK will come together to celebrate the power of sport in the lives of children and young people. This week provides a fantastic opportunity to integrate physical activity into our lessons, promote inclusivity, and underscore the importance of sports for both physical and mental wellbeing.

About National School Sports Week

National School Sports Week is an annual event that aims to inspire children to participate in sports and physical activities. This year’s theme is “Monster Kickabout,” and the idea is to use the backdrop of the Euros, Olympics and Paralympics to inspire children to not only kick footballs, but try new sports & move more to support their physical and mental health. The week is organised by the Youth Sport Trust, which provides a range of resources and support to help schools participate.

Incorporating sports into lessons

Sports don’t only have to take place in PE; they can be incorporated into various subjects to ensure they are an integral part of a child’s overall education.

Here are some creative ways to weave the excitement of National School Sports Week into your teaching:

Themed Lessons: Integrate sports themes into your subjects. For example, in maths, you could use sports statistics to teach data analysis or in history lessons, you could explore the origins of different sports and their cultural significance.

Active Breaks: Incorporate short physical activities or “brain breaks” between lessons to keep students energised and focused. Activities like stretching, jumping jacks or a quick dance routine can be both fun and beneficial.

Sports-Based Challenges: Create class challenges or competitions that encourage teamwork and physical activity. These could be simple relay races, obstacle courses or even a mini-Olympics event.

Sports Storytelling: Encourage students to share stories or presentations about their favourite sports, memorable games or athletes they admire. This can improve their public speaking and narrative skills.

Promoting Inclusivity in School Sports

Inclusivity in physical education and sports is not just about ensuring everyone has a chance to participate, but also about fostering an environment where all students feel valued, supported and capable of success. In an educational setting, this means recognising and addressing the diverse needs of students, whether they stem from physical abilities, cultural backgrounds or personal interests.

One of the most critical areas of focus is inclusivity for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). These students often face unique challenges that require tailored approaches and adaptations in PE and sports activities. It is essential for educators to implement strategies that facilitate their full participation. This can include modifying equipment or employing technology to assist in communication and movement. The goal is to ensure that SEND students experience the joy and benefits of sports, building their confidence, social skills and physical health.

Here are five practical ideas to support the inclusion of sport for SEND students:

  • You should modify sports and games to cater to different skill levels and abilities. For example, use softer and lighters balls or lower the height of goals for those in wheelchairs.
  • Offer a variety of sports and physical activities that cater to different interests and abilities. This could include non-competitive games, dance, yoga or adapted versions & rules of popular sports to ensure everyone can participate.
  • Use clear, simple instructions and visual aids to explain activities. Demonstrate movements and use engaging task cards or videos to help students understand and follow along.
  • Provide positive feedback and celebrate all students’ achievements, no matter how small. Recognising effort and progress will boost their confidence and encourages continued participation.
  • Integrate short movement breaks throughout the day to help SEND students stay focused and regulate their energy levels. Simple exercises like stretching or chair exercises can be useful for those who are physically disabled.

The Importance of Sport for Wellbeing

Sports play a vital role in the holistic development of children and young people.

Regular physical activity helps children develop strong muscles and bones, maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.

Engaging in sports can significantly impact mental health by reducing anxiety, depression and stress. Physical activity stimulates the production of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.

Playing team sports helps to teach students essential social skills such as teamwork, communication and leadership and provides a sense of belonging amongst peers.

Many studies have shown that physically active children tend to perform better academically. Regular exercise improves concentration, memory and behaviour in the classroom.

As we gear up for National School Sports Week, let’s embrace the opportunity to inspire our students through sport. Together, we can create an environment where every child feels encouraged to participate and enjoy the numerous benefits that physical activity brings.

We have exciting PE teaching roles available within many of our partner schools in the UK areas we cover. If you are interested in finding out more and applying for these roles, please contact your local justteachers branch by visiting  https://jt-old.fleekstaging.co.uk/contact/
