About the role:

A supportive and nurturing SEND school in Spilsby is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team as soon as possible. This rewarding role involves supporting children and young people with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs in the classroom and throughout the school day, helping them engage positively with learning and school routines.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to adapt activities, break down tasks, and provide individualised support that meets pupils’ emotional and learning needs.
  • Implement behaviour support strategies and promote positive relationships, helping pupils develop self-regulation, coping skills, and confidence.
  • Use restorative and nurturing approaches to de-escalate situations, support emotional wellbeing, and encourage positive decision-making.
  • Build strong, professional relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and trusted adult role model.
  • Support the delivery of interventions, social skills activities, and programmes aimed at improving emotional resilience and engagement in education.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, sharing observations with the wider school team where appropriate.

Pre-requisites:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, SEND, or additional needs within schools, care settings, youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, or similar environments.
  • A good understanding of emotional regulation, attachment needs, trauma-informed practices, and strategies that support positive behaviour.
  • Confidence managing challenging situations calmly, professionally, and consistently whilst maintaining positive relationships with pupils.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust quickly.
  • A patient, resilient, and nurturing approach, alongside a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Youth Work, Health & Social Care, Sports Coaching, or equivalent experience are desirable.
  • An interest in promoting pupils’ wellbeing, confidence, independence, and long-term success both inside and outside the classroom.
