This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and resilient Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs. The successful candidate will provide dedicated one-to-one support for a pupil with SEMH needs, helping them to engage positively with learning, develop emotional regulation strategies, and build confidence and independence within a safe, structured, and nurturing school environment.

The school is committed to providing high-quality, personalised support that enables every child to thrive both academically and emotionally. This role would suit a patient, adaptable, and empathetic individual who can build strong, trusting relationships and is committed to making a lasting difference to the life of a child.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide dedicated one-to-one support for a pupil with SEMH needs, ensuring they are fully supported to access learning opportunities.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider pastoral team to implement personalised learning and behaviour support plans.
  • Support the pupil’s academic progress while promoting emotional wellbeing, resilience, self-esteem, and independence.
  • Use positive behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques to support the pupil in regulating their emotions and behaviour.
  • Adapt learning activities and classroom resources to meet the individual needs of the pupil.
  • Build a trusting and consistent relationship with the pupil, providing encouragement, reassurance, and appropriate challenge.
  • Help the pupil develop positive social skills, emotional literacy, and confidence within the classroom and wider school environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals to ensure consistent and effective support.
  • Monitor, record, and report on the pupil’s progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, providing regular feedback to the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Support the pupil during breaktimes, educational visits, and wider school activities where appropriate.
  • Promote safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times.
  • Uphold the school’s values and commitment to providing an inclusive education for every child.

Pre-requisites:

  • Previous experience working with children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural needs, or additional learning needs is highly desirable.
  • Experience working within a primary school, specialist provision, or alternative education setting would be advantageous.
  • A good understanding of positive behaviour support strategies and restorative approaches.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A patient, calm, resilient, and flexible approach to supporting children with additional needs.
  • The ability to build positive, trusting relationships and work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • A commitment to helping every child achieve their full potential.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Relevant Teaching Assistant qualifications are desirable but not essential.
  • Two recent education-based references.
