About the role:

Justteachers is seeking a dynamic, resilient and relationship‑focused Pastoral Support Worker to join a specialist Alternative Provision in the Leeds area. This full‑time role is to start as soon as possible, with shortlisting currently taking place.

This provision supports young people who have experienced barriers to mainstream education, including SEMH needs, disengagement and challenging backgrounds. The school is passionate about providing strong, consistent role models who can inspire, guide and support pupils both academically and personally.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a background or strong interest in sport, coaching or mentoring (or similar roles), who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people.

You will play a key role in supporting pupils — particularly those who benefit from positive, relatable role models — helping them develop confidence, resilience, self-discipline and respect through strong relationships and structured support.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing 1:1 and small‑group pastoral support to pupils with SEMH needs
  • Building strong, positive relationships to support behaviour, engagement and wellbeing
  • Using sport, physical activity and practical approaches to motivate and re-engage learners (Desirable)
  • Supporting emotional regulation using trauma‑informed and restorative approaches
  • Assisting within lessons to improve focus, behaviour and participation
  • Promoting positive values such as respect, resilience, teamwork and accountability
  • Supporting transitions, routines and attendance
  • Working closely with teaching staff, behaviour leads and pastoral teams

Pre-requisites:

  • A background or strong interest in sport, coaching, mentoring or youth work
  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour (desirable)
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills
  • A calm, firm and consistent approach
  • Ability to act as a positive role model within a school and community setting
  • A passion for supporting young people to make better choices and progress
