About the role:

A supportive and inclusive school in Scunthorpe is seeking a Pastoral Support Assistant to work with pupils who require additional emotional, social, or behavioural support. The school provides a nurturing environment focused on helping children and young people feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Support is delivered through structured routines, consistent relationships, and a strong focus on wellbeing and engagement. This role is available to start ASAP, with full‑time or part‑time options considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide targeted pastoral support to pupils who may be dysregulated, anxious, or experiencing barriers to learning.
  • Support pupils on a 1:1 or small‑group basis, helping them manage emotions, build resilience, and re‑engage with learning.
  • Use calm, consistent strategies to encourage positive behaviour and support emotional regulation in line with school policies.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote confidence, wellbeing, and engagement.
  • Work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to implement individual support plans, behaviour strategies, and wellbeing interventions.

Pre-requisites:

  • Experience supporting children or young people in a pastoral, behavioural, or support‑focused role within education, care, youth work, or similar settings.
  • A good understanding of social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) and how these can impact learning and behaviour.
  • Confidence using de‑escalation techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and restorative approaches.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent when supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviours.
  • Relevant qualifications such as Youth Work, Childcare, Teaching Assistant, Psychology, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
