About the role:

justteachers are currently recruiting for a full-time SEMH Teaching Assistant position within an alternative provision in the Peterborough area, starting in September on a long-term supply basis.
This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals with experience in education, youth work, care, residential support, behaviour support, mentoring, or similar backgrounds who are passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
The provision supports pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, alongside associated behavioural and communication challenges. The school offers a structured, nurturing environment focused on emotional regulation, positive relationships, and re-engaging pupils with education.

Key Responsibilities:

Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
Supporting pupils to access learning and engage positively in lessons
Building strong, trusting relationships with young people
Implementing behaviour support plans and emotional regulation strategies
Supporting pupils during transitions, breaktimes and less structured parts of the school day
Promoting resilience, confidence and positive coping mechanisms
Working closely with teachers, pastoral teams and external agencies
Monitoring and recording pupil progress, wellbeing and behaviour
Helping to create a safe, structured and supportive learning environment

Pre-requisites:

Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural or additional learning needs
Candidates from education, care, youth work, residential care, support work or mentoring backgrounds
A calm, patient and resilient approach
Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills
An understanding of trauma-informed or restorative approaches would be beneficial
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
The ability to remain consistent and adaptable in challenging situations
A genuine passion for supporting young people to achieve positive outcomes

As part of our safeguarding and compliance process, we require a minimum of two professional references covering the last two years in full, along with an Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one).
