We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a specialist school in Warwick that supports children with autism. This setting is designed to meet the unique needs of children on the autism spectrum, providing a tailored, therapeutic approach that helps them develop their confidence, independence, and academic potential.

This is a full-time position, starting after the February half term, with the opportunity to transition into a permanent role for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead small-group and one-to-one sessions, delivering planned interventions and supporting the teacher in implementing individual learning plans.
  • Foster a calm and structured environment, using autism-friendly strategies to support students’ engagement and development.
  • Assist in managing challenging behaviours, using de-escalation techniques and following the school’s behaviour management policies.
  • Adapt teaching resources and activities to suit the specific needs of each student.
  • Support the development of communication skills using tools such as PECS, Makaton, or other assistive technologies.
  • Encourage the development of life skills and independence in a nurturing and supportive manner.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure consistent and holistic support for each child.

Essential Requirements

  • Proven experience working with children with autism, preferably in a school or specialist setting.
  • HLTA status or equivalent qualification.
  • A strong understanding of autism and effective strategies to support learning and development.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to lead sessions and support colleagues.
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Two references from education or care-based roles.
