We are seeking a Mental Health Teaching Assistant to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about supporting students’ mental health and well-being within an educational setting.

The school is a special school catering for children aged between 11 and 18 providing a therapeutic environment. The children are likely to have autism,  complex needs, ADHD, sensory processing needs, high anxiety, low self-esteem, socially vulnerable and experienced Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

Job Description:

As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students experiencing mental health challenges, supporting their emotional well-being and enabling them to engage fully in their education. You will collaborate with teaching staff and the school’s mental health support team to provide tailored interventions, promote positive mental health strategies, and create a nurturing environment for students. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring students feel supported and are able to manage their emotional needs in a school setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to students experiencing mental health difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, or stress.
  • Assist in implementing individualized support plans and mental health interventions.
  • Work alongside teachers to help students access the curriculum and participate in classroom activities.
  • Offer emotional and pastoral support to students, building trust and fostering a positive school experience.
  • Help students develop coping strategies and emotional regulation skills.
  • Monitor students’ well-being and progress, maintaining regular communication with teachers, parents, and mental health professionals.
  • Encourage and support positive behaviours, helping students manage challenging situations in a calm and supportive manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding protocols to ensure the well-being of all students.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience supporting children or young people, particularly those with mental health challenges or additional needs.
  • Knowledge or experience of supporting students with SEMH (Social Emotional Mental Health), learning difficulties, or additional needs and how they can impact learning and behaviour.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with mental health support, therapeutic techniques, or interventions is desirable.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
  • A relevant qualification in mental health, psychology, education, or child development (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent) is desirable.
  • A proactive, flexible, and compassionate approach to supporting students.
  • A clear enhanced DBS or willingness to apply for one.
