Special Education Needs Teaching Assistant/Disability Support Assistant required for a Special School in Keighley.

The School is a co-educational, generic community special school catering for pupils aged 11 to 19 years who have a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The majority of the learners have an Education Heath Care Plan (EHCP) or are on an assessment place awaiting an EHCP.

 Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Supporting students with SEND
  • To support a high standard of learning, development and care for children ages 5-16 years.
  • To ensure that the school is a safe environment for children, staff and others.
  • To develop partnerships with parents/carers to increase involvement in their child’s development.
  • To support activities which ensure each pupil is working towards their learning goals.
  • To be a key person, keeping accurate assessments of children’s learning and progress.
  • To liaise closely with parents/carers/social workers informing them about the school and its curriculum, exchanging information about children’s progress and encouraging parents’ involvement.
  • To work in partnership with senior management to update and review the self-evaluation and improvement plans for each pupil.

Ideal candidates will have experience in some of the below:

  • Working with children and/or young people
  • Working with SEND; Autism, Sensory Impairment, Physical Disabilities, Speech Language and Communicational Needs including Non-Verbal, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, Visual Impairment, Epilepsy, SEMH and Behavioural Needs
  • Makaton, PECS, BSL, Team Teach, Manual Handling, Safeguarding, Epilepsy Training
  • Have a Teaching Assistant Qualification, degree or equivalent (Not Essential)

You will need to;

  • Have the ability to work 1:1 or as part of a team
  • Be passionate, friendly, outgoing and resilient
  • Be comfortable with Personal Care (if required)
  • Have the ability to improvise and support others in case of an unexpected event occurring
