Justteachers is looking for a compassionate and experienced Mental Health Teaching Assistant to support students in an alternative provision setting in East Heckington. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about helping young people overcome challenges related to mental health, providing them with the support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

About the Role: As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students facing mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related issues. You will play a vital role in helping them engage with their education, build resilience, and develop positive coping strategies. Working within an alternative provision, you’ll support students who may have struggled in mainstream education, ensuring they have the tools and guidance to succeed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with mental health needs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of personalized support plans.
  • Help students manage their emotions and behaviors in a classroom setting.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and other staff to ensure holistic student support.
  • Monitor student progress and well-being, providing feedback to the wider team.
  • Support the de-escalation of challenging situations in a calm and constructive manner.
  • Encourage students’ academic engagement and emotional development.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children and young people with mental health needs.
  • Strong understanding of mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in handling difficult situations.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support individual learning and emotional needs.
  • Experience working in alternative provision or challenging educational environments is an advantage.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in education, mental health, or child development.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and behavior management strategies.
  • Experience supporting students with additional needs, including SEND or SEMH.
