The UK Education System
The UK school year consists of 3 terms and runs from September to July, with holidays at Christmas, Easter and Summer. The National Curriculum sets standards for the skills and knowledge of all pupils between ages 5 to 16. The National Curriculum established English, Maths and Science as core subjects, with 8 additional foundation subjects - Information Technology, Modern Languages, History, Geography, Music, Art, Design and Physical Education.
At the end of key stages 1, 2 and 3, pupils are assessed by national tests known as SATS (Standard Attainment Tests), in the core subjects. In addition, pupils sit their GCSEs at the end of year group 11 and can continue to study and sit ‘A’ or ‘AS’ levels in year 13.
