WORKER PROTECTION:
No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to
know about living and teaching in the UK. But Justteachers
have tried to cover it all!
It's worth remembering this when working in Britain:
- Your UK employer has a duty to make sure that you are safe at work - free from danger of accidents or any occupational health risk
- They must make sure you have right safety clothing, and be given proper instruction on how to use any equipment
- They must ensure that your place of work is not a fire risk, with a current
British fire certificate, the correct fire extinguishers, and signs to tell you where to go if there is a fire
- There should be a notice about British health and safety at work
regulations which you can read and understand
- There should be a person who you know is responsible for first aid if there is an accident, and a book in which all accidents are recorded
- Your British employer cannot keep your passport; they can only make a copy with your permission
- They cannot keep too much money for accommodation, or charge you anything for food. But they can charge for transport
- There is a British legal minimum wage, we tell you how to find out what that is, and you must be paid it
- If you are underpaid, or put at risk, or in any way mistreated, there are many people who will help you to solve the problem - unions, the Gangmasters Licensing Authority, the Association of Labour Providers, CrimeStoppers, and the
British police
- You should enjoy the same protection as any British worker. And you will find that British people, in general, will be sympathetic and help you if you have problems.
