UK FINANCE, BANKS and BRITISH MONEY:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know about living and teaching in the UK. But Justteachers have tried to cover it all!

The following points are worth remembering about UK finance:

  • Make sure you know the value of the money you have and the prices you are asked to pay. Justteachers have provided a currency converter for this purpose
  • It is not so hard to set up a deposit account with a British bank. Your employer should help you. It will have only basic facilities and no credit. But your money will be safe. And the bank will help you to pay bills electronically
  • If you pass a series of checks you will be able to set up a current account with many facilities
  • Most British banks will let you do online banking
  • If you have no bank account you can still easily transfer funds to another country through Western Union , the Post Office, or Thomas Cook
  • Most foreign countries have a bank in the UK
  • You should be paid when you are in training, when you are sick, and for 4 weeks of holidays a year
  • When you start work in the UK you must get a National Insurance Number (NINo) and a tax code (maybe a temporary code which will change)
  • Your temporary tax code will decide how much tax you pay. If it is too much, you will get it back later
  • Try not to get into financial trouble. It can take 6 years to lose a bad credit record!
