TAXATION, NATIONAL INSURANCE, MINIMUM WAGES and PENSIONS:
No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to
know about living and teaching in the UK. But Justteachers
have tried to cover it all!
The main points are probably as follows:
- Being part of the UK legal economy is in your best interests
- To work you should have a National Insurance Number (also known as a NINo)
- Once you have this number you can get UK benefits, including free National Health Service (NHS) treatment and financial help if you have a problem
- Once you have a NINo you may pay UK taxes if you earn enough to do so
- You also become locked into entitlements to a British state pension, or part of one
- The people responsible for collecting taxes in the UK are Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
- HMRC also organises help if, for example, you have children
- We have provided a clear list of the different rates of
UK taxation and tax allowances
- Being a worker with a NINo should guarantee that you are paid at least the
UK legal minimum wage, whatever your age
- Being a worker with a NINo means you have some protection at work from unscrupulous, careless and inept
UK employers who might risk your life or health
