TYPICAL CONTRACTS:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know about living and teaching in the UK. But Justteachers have tried to cover it all!

The important things to remember about UK teaching contracts are:

  • Everybody in the UK should be working on a contract
  • That contract will usually be a contact for services or as a supplier
  • Your contract may be directly with an employer or with an employment agency
  • The UK has many employment laws for your protection, and these will be woven into any legal contract for the purpose of information but a contract cannot take away any legal rights that you have
  • Your UK contract should be something you understand, and if you don't understand it you must be given a translation (in print) or interpretation (explanation in your own language) of what it means
  • Even if you have no contract, you still have legal rights in the UK and protections. And you even have legal rights and protections if you are not entitled to work
  • You should be given a copy of your contract to keep. Make sure that you keep it safe!
  • The sample contract we have provided is typical of those used by British employment agencies
  • The contract is not just a promise of what an employer will give you, but a promise of what you must give in return!
  • If your employer breaks the contract then you can take action, through the British courts or a 3 rd party arbitration service, to settle the problem fairly
