Types of Work

In your interview with a Justteachers Consultant you will discuss the type of teaching assignment that is best suited to you. Justteachers are able to offer you the full range of teaching assignments:

  • Long Term
  • Day-to-day
  • Permanent Placements

Each has its own advantages with regard to flexibility and security. After establishing your suitability, the Justteachers team will get to work on finding you that special position.

tick Long-term
Long-term positions are the most common and can run from 5 weeks, to a term, or longer. Teachers accepting long-term positions will appreciate the stability of consistent work, five days a week, throughout the academic year. When accepting longer-term placements you will have all of the benefits of a full time member of staff. There are three terms in the UK and they run from September to December, January to Easter and then Easter through to the end of July. If you are looking to secure a long term job then schools will be long for teachers to fit into these timescales. Eg If you are arriving in December or very early January then you could pick up a long term job that lasted for two terms through to the end of July.

You can enjoy teaching your own class(es) and become an integral part of each student's development. As a long-term teacher you will have full classroom teacher responsibilities including lesson planning, assessments, attending meetings, liasing with parents and educational bodies and you will also be involved in professional development

Day-to-Day
Day-to-day supply is an excellent way to kick-start your teaching career in the UK. You will be introduced to a variety of schools and teaching situations and you'll gain an insight into the different ways schools are run. Teachers arriving outside of the normal school terms, or who require the flexibility of working when they like often prefer this option. You can work whenever and wherever you like, however, there are restrictions with regards to transport if you do not have a car or live close to a good train network.
The key to day-to-day supply work is keeping in touch with your Justteachers consultant. Often positions are filled on the evening prior to, or the morning of, the day a teacher is required. You will be asked to contact our office between the hours of 4pm to 6pm each afternoon and 7am to 9am each morning to inform the team of your availability. Because day-to-day work requires flexibility and spontaneity we ask that you are prepared for work early and can access travel details promptly.
Often daily placements can turn into longer-term assignments, which is one of the benefits of day-to-day teaching. If you have enjoyed a particular daily placement be sure to inform the school contact and your Consultant, as the school may require you for future work. We encourage all teachers to give as much feedback as possible.

Permanent
For those teachers interested in permanent contracts or who require Sponsored Work Permits, Justteachers offers permanent placements. In this case a school will interview you in the normal way but when you accept the position you will become a full-time and contracted employee of the school. Again, these positions are for teachers who require the security of constant work and a regular income.
Permanent positions are ongoing and benefits here include holiday and sickness pay. Generally schools ask for at least a one-year commitment when employing for these positions.
The key to enjoying your teaching, whether it is long-term, day-to-day or permanent, is organisation and preparation. Whichever option you choose, our Consultants will help you to settle down quickly and teach effectively in each assignment. Be sure to keep in regular contact with us. Our office hours in the UK are 7.00am to 6.30 pm, and you can always contact us via email at enquiries@justteachers.co.uk

Nursery Schools and Early Childhood Centres

In the UK long-day childcare centres are known as Day Nurseries and are either privately owned or run by the local Borough. In addition there are Nursery departments attached to Infant or Primary schools.
UK regulations require Nurseries to be registered with at least half of the staff having early childhood qualifications. Pre-schools are also known as Nurseries for up to 4 year olds after which the children enter the first year of formal learning in a Reception class. The Reception class is what's known as the Foundation Stage. This would be equivalent to Kindergarten in Australia and New Entrants in New Zealand. Sometimes Nursery Nurses are employed as Classroom Assistants in both the Reception and Year 1 and indeed throughout the school. In Day Nurseries the programme, particularly for the younger children, is based largely around themes and topics and will be under the direction of a Nursery Manager.

Primary and Secondary Schools

England has both public and private schools within all sectors of the education system. (Ironically many private schools are called Public schools). Primary schools cater for 5-11 year olds while the secondary schools cater for 11-18 year olds. In some cases 16-18 year olds are taught in a sixth form or tertiary colleges. Since 1988, schools have conformed to the teaching guidelines of the National Curriculum.
The National Curriculum was put in place to raise teaching standards and provide a consistent level of education across all schools. The core subject areas include English, Mathematics, Science, Design & Technology and Information Technology. Schools will also offer a selection of other subjects to provide a complete curriculum. In England examinations are taken at the age of 16 for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), and at 18 for the Advanced Level (A Level). For more details regarding the National Curriculum go to www.nc.uk.net

In the primary sector there have been significant changes to the way Literacy and Numeracy are taught in Primary Schools. To summarise, an hour is dedicated to prescriptive learning activities for Literacy and then another hour for Numeracy. The Literacy and Numeracy Hours are well supported by resources and assessment modules. When teaching these you will know exactly what needs to be achieved from each lesson and you are guided throughout.
During your induction interview with your consultant you will be given information and details about teaching Literacy and Numeracy in the UK.

SEN Schools (Special Educational Needs)

In addition to the SEN departments in mainstream schools, there are separate SEN schools that provide an education for pupils of both the primary and secondary age groups. SEN schools have smaller classes that are often supported by a teacher and a classroom assistant, or a Nursery Nurse in the case of primary schools. Types of SEN schools include EBD - Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, MLD - Moderate Learning Difficulties and SLD - Severe Learning Difficulties.
At Just Teachers we are able to offer our teachers the opportunity to develop their experience of the SEN sector through teaching in these schools. In the UK you do not necessarily need an SEN qualification or experience to teach in this sector. Working with children with Special Educational Needs can be a rewarding and memorable experience.
